The Book Thief is a novel by Australian author Markus Zusak. Set in Nazi Germany, it describes a young girl’s relationship with her foster parents, the other residents of their neighbourhood, and a young Jewish man who hides in her home during the escalation of World War II.
First published in 2005, the book has won numerous awards and was listed on The New York Times Best Seller list for over 230 weeks. The book is now a film (2013).
In an interview Sophie Nélisse (born 27 March 2000), a Canadian teen actress, said: “I really felt like I had to do the movie. Because people my age, my generation, don’t know anything about it, and I want that in 40 years or 100 years people still know what happened.”
